Scientists Discover That Plants Communicate via Symbiotic Root Fungi

Soil & Compost
I rarely recopy articles in their entirety to share on this blog, but this one is so awesome, I wanted everyone to see it for sure. Organic gardening is NOT over-rated. It is not strictly for "tree huggers" and vegetarians, it is not a fad or "so 70's", it is critical for health and the well being of humanity. By Dr. Mercola Human arrogance has always assumed we are evolutionarily superior to plants, but it appears that modern science may be the antidote to this egocentric view. Researchers in the UK have discovered an extensive underground network connecting plants by their roots, serving as a complex interplant communication system... a “plant Internet,” if you will. One organism is responsible for this amazing biochemical highway: a type of fungus called mycorrhizae.…

The Benefits of Organic Food

The Benefits of Organic Food

Healthy Eating, Organic Gardening, Soil & Compost
A Growing Body of Scientific Evidence Many people purchase organic food because they believe it is healthier than conventionally grown food. The organic industry is constantly told that there is no evidence to support these claims. This article looks at published information that shows that organic food is substantially healthier than conventional food. Research published in a 2001 study showed that the current fruit and vegetables in the United States have about half the vitamin content of their counterparts in 1963. The study was based on a comparison of published USDA figures. A scientific study published in the Journal of Applied Nutrition in 1993 clearly showed that organic food is more nutritious than conventional food. Organically and conventionally grown apples, potatoes, pears, wheat and sweet corn were purchased over two…

Florida lawmaker wants to make farm photos illegal

Chickens, Farm Animals
Along with mountains of oranges, tomatoes, and sugar, Florida's branch of Big Ag Inc. is a reliable producer of bad news. Whether it's the fight over proto-slavery conditions for its tomato workers, the push to perfect genetically modified oranges, or the outrage of the crony capitalist "solutions" to the environmental degradations of sugar plantations, it seems like there's always something rotten in the state of Florida. Oh, and did I mention that Florida also has a shockingly low number of organic farms? So I am not surprised to learn that a creative (not to mention unconstitutional and idiotic) solution to the grave problems with factory farms should arise in the Sunshine state (via the Florida Tribune and Matt Yglesias): SB 1246 by Sen. Jim Norman, R-Tampa, would make it a…

Farmers Are Flocking to Manure

Farm Animals, Organic Gardening, Small Scale Farming, Soil & Compost
The closest thing I can find to a directory on getting local manure is CraigsList. I am sure if you look hard enough you can find a location or farmer in your area that will happily supply you with enough manure to use for home organic gardening Then, I ran across this article, Why Farmers are Flocking to Manure that throws out this common statistic... "It has taken us about 100 years to reduce soil organic matter to dangerously low levels from about 5 percent, on average, to below 2 percent." That blog article was adapted from the book, Holy Shit: Managing Manure to Save Mankind" So they are running out of chemical fertilizer. Go Figure. And how fast could our commercial farming industry make the move to organic farming?…

Buying And Managing An Organic Farm Property

Small Scale Farming
Organic farming has been with us since farming began but it has taken on new meaning. The demand for organic farms has increased over the years so much that almost part of the country has them. Organic farms were the way farmers planted and looked after tier crops till fertilizer were discovered. Up to a point, these chemicals which were originally created to help in the control of soil fertility had rather become man's enemies. The poisonous substances were the cause of many diseases. Food from these farms therefore became unwholesome. Compounding the problem was the discovery that chemicals used to control weeds were equally poisonous. It could be said that these developments created the need for a new kind of farm – one which the farmer had taken steps…

UPDATE: Many people were unable to get the text for this bill, or it was simply unavailable. We have obtained the full text and can be disseminated here: H. R. 875 Food Safety Administration Full Text This bill is sitting in committee and I am not sure when it will go to the floor. One thing I do know is that very few of the Representatives have read it. I know it is difficult to read so many laws that go through, but something as important and far reaching as this bill should be read. And we should be encouraging our congressmen to vote against it... So often, when pressed for time, they take someone else's word for what the bill contains. HR875 Bill proponents will be counting on it.…
